Welcome to an event organised by Mistra Environmental Communication, where we will hear from practitioners based in Sweden and India regarding their views on sustainable production, opportunities and challenges in the sector, to promote broader dialogue about sustainability.

There are several imperatives for the clothing and textiles sector to move towards circularity and ensure the sustainability of their global value chains. While there has been considerable progress in the sector, significant challenges remain, including developing better mutual understanding between suppliers in the Global South and European-based buyers and retailers. Stakeholders have multiple views of how sustainability is defined and understood, and the methods used to increase and verify sustainable practice. There are also multiple perspectives on how sustainable practices can be managed and verified, and issues such as transparency, certifications, social and environmental impact continue to be negotiated between stakeholders.

At this event, we will hear from practitioners based in Sweden and India regarding their views on sustainable production, opportunities and challenges in the sector, to promote broader dialogue about sustainability. As part of an ongoing MISTRA Environmental Communication program, researchers from SLU, The University of Texas at Austin and Massey University in New Zealand will also discuss insights from their multi-year study of global cotton value chains extending from India to Sweden.

Participants

  • Sriranga Rajan, Chairman Dibella India and CEO, Sustainably Crafted Clothing, will speak on challenges regarding sustainability from the perspective of an Indian supplier, providing unique insights into local production and sustainability issues.
  • Researchers from the Mistra Environmental Communication Program, Prof Shiv Ganesh (UT Austin, USA) and Prof Nitha Palakshappa (Massey University, NZ) will report on insights from their engagement with farmers, cooperatives, and garment factories between 2020-2023.
  • Sustainability managers from Swedish fashion companies will discuss their view of challenges and opportunities in engaging with suppliers from the Global South, and reflections on their sustainability practices.
