AgriFoSe2030 Media Showcase and Promotional event

AgriFoSe2030 invites you to join our media showcase event in Nairobi on 14 November.  The event targets multiple stakeholders including policy makers, academic institutions, civil society, private sector, international organisations, national and regional agriculture institutions. The event will be live-streamed on Youtube.

Theme: Leveraging scientific research and local knowledge for agricultural sustainability

Background
Despite increased wealth and prosperity in the past 3 decades, poverty, hunger and malnutrition remain rife across the world. FAO estimates that approximately 2.3 billion people are food insecure, and 827 million people are affected by hunger while 30% of all food produced is lost or wasted. The situation is expected to worsen with major trends including climate change, population growth and crop diseases constituting major stressors on global food production. These trends threaten farmer’s livelihoods especially in vulnerable contexts and may lead to deepened poverty, hunger and malnutrition.

With smallholder agriculture as a major contributor to economic growth and livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia, there exists consensus among scientists and policy makers for its transformation. Such transformation is expected to have widereaching societal implications through improving economic gains, biodiversity and attainment of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (Agenda 2030).

Transforming smallholder production to be efficient and sustainable requires stakeholders to think differently and harness workable scientific and local solutions that are people oriented, protect the planet and emphasise shared prosperity. This includes making best use of science-based knowledge for improving smallholder practices and agricultural policies.

About AgriFoSe2030:

The AgriFoSe2030 Programme Translating scientific evidence into policy and practice and increasing researchers’ linkages with institutions and local communities offers one of the strongest opportunities for catalysing change
and realising the vision of a more sustainable world. By emphasising a collaborative knowledgedriven approach, the AgriFoSe2030 programme synthesises and translates science-based knowledge into policy and practice, develops capacity to achieve this and leverages stakeholder engagement
to support sustainable agriculture and food security in Africa and Asia.

The programme includes four key challenges and 17 illustrative change projects that allow researchers to work collaboratively with local communities and institutions. It also supports capacity development for science
translation through partnerships with universities and research institutes in Kenya, Uganda and Vietnam. While the programme contributes explicitly to SDG 2 which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture, its integrated food systems
approach is tied to several other SDG’s including SDGs 1 (no poverty) and 3 (good health and wellbeing).
