The methodology Design Thinking is especially suited for interdisciplinary research projects as it challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions. Dr. Antje Gonera, leader of the strategic research program FoodForFuture at the Norwegian food research institute, Nofima, will talk about her experience of using Design Thinking for interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge transfer in research projects in this lunch webinar from the Interdisciplinary Academy, IDA.

Dr. Antje Gonera is a senior scientist for innovation and leader of the strategic research program FoodForFuture at the Norwegian food research institute, Nofima. In her research she focuses on understanding hidden consumer/customer needs to identify opportunities for innovation. In this lunch webinar by the Interdisciplinary Academy, IDA, Gonera will focus on her experience of using Design Thinking for interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge transfer in research projects.

Design Thinking is encapsulated in the four D:s – Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. It is a suited methodology for interdiciplinary research projects as it challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions. One start the interdisciplinary project by properly exploring the often rather amorphous and ill-defined subject area, and this can take considerable time. The process then continue by defining the specific topic, develops by testing out ideas and concepts, and finally delivers a “solution”.

Gonera develops and establishes Design Thinking and systems oriented design based methods and tools to improve interdisciplinary collaboration and value generation in research projects. Many of the projects she is engaged in facilitate sustainability transition initiatives and projects. She also has extensive experience from different strategic roles in industry, such as Research & Development, Technology Development, intellectual property rights, quality assurance, Product Development, Consumer Research.

The main objective of the research program FoodForFuture at the Norwegian food research institute, Nofima, is to contribute to research-driven innovation in the Norwegian food industry in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals through understanding innovation processes, consumers, and product and process interactions.

The Interdisciplinary Academy (IDA) is a new opportunity for SLU researchers from all faculties. The aim of the initiative is to increase knowledge of and interest in interdisciplinary research among researchers at SLU, strengthen their ability to address research issues from an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective and facilitate collaborations between different departments. IDA is initiated and led by SLU Future Food, one of SLU's four future platforms, supported by the NJ faculty.

SLU Future Food is a platform for research and collaboration to develop knowledge, solutions and innovations aimed at ensuring that the entire food system is characterized by economic, ecological and social sustainability to overcome tomorrow's challenges. The research addresses both plants and animals, from the smallest molecules to global systems.
