Abstract for the talk:

“Global, policy-makers increasingly recognize the importance of cultural ecosystem services (CES). Geotagged social media images provide an efficient alternative to time-consuming surveys for assessing CES. Automating image classification, aided by emerging deep learning, enables the extension of this approach to larger study areas. Our study on 91,000 images from British Columbia's provincial parks, classified using convolutional neural networks (CNN), demonstrates that combining crowd-sourced social media images with advanced deep learning offers a cost-effective method for ecosystem managers to access comprehensive CES data.“
