PhD course: Forest damage – Incidence and causation
events |
Forest provide several biobased products and a number of ecosystem services such as habitat for wildlife, clean the air and water and regulate the climate. Damage to forest can have serious consequences for the productivity, environment and the species that depend on them. Forest damage include disturbances caused by both abiotic and biotic agents e.g. fire, drought, storm, pests and pathogens.
The objective of the course is to provide the PhD students with a basic understanding of the biology and ecology of forest damage agents as well as their risks and effects. This course provides practical experience to recognize symptoms of forest damage and diagnostisize common pests and pathogens. During the study week lectures on ecology, population biology, and population genetics as well as morphological and molecular identification of species will be given.
The course is primarily intended for PhD students within the SILVA Research School but is open to all PhD students at SLU. For PhD students outside SLU a fee covering operating costs will be charged
