PhD course: Introduction to image analysis for forest sciences, 4.5 ECTS

events | seminars, workshops |

The course will give an introduction to image analysis for application in forest sciences. It will cover basic concepts and techniques in images analysis and the students apply their new skills to solve an image analysis task in a project.

Image analysis in forest sciences includes a number of techniques and methods for image processing and interpretation that can be applied to drone images and digital canopy models as well as close-range images and microscope images. Upon the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • perform image preprocessing such as greyscale thresholding and noise reduction
  • apply basic filters (e.g., mean or median) to images
  • perform histogram processing of images
  • apply morphological filters to images
  • perform basic image segmentation
  • perform image classification
  • perform basic object recognition
