In October we had the first Nature Interpretation Lab Webinar, as continuing discussion at the lunch-to-lunch symposium, “Interpreting, Learning, and Being with Natureculture,” CNV organized earlier this year. The Nature Interpretation Lab Webinars are a series that aim to provide a platform for anyone interested in natureculture interpretation. Our goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners, with each webinar featuring a concrete case or project presentation, followed by an open discussion.
Trails and tales in landscapes and histories
Online, Tuesday December 10th, 13.00-14.30
In this second webinar, CNV researcher Jasmine Zhang will give a short talk with the title “Trails and tales in landscapes and histories”.
When discussing hiking trails in the context of nature interpretation, we often think of road signs, interpretation panels, or the workers who maintain the trail. Perhaps we envision a storyline or a guiding theme conveyed by a nature guide or interpreter. Building on the ideas and images of hiking trails, walking paths, and travel routes, Jasmine will delve into the relationships between these trails and their social, spatial, and temporal contexts.
- How does a trail emerge or vanish in a particular landscape?
- What does a wanderer perceive their surrounding when walking along a lowland or mountain route?
- How are everyday paths used by farmers or foresters also a part of a local society's collective memory?
- What stories do we tell each other as we walk trails that hold meaning for us—even if in different ways for different people?
- What happens when an old trail attracts new attention and visitors?
Jasmine will explore these questions as part of Work Package 5: Co-creating Transformations through Environmental Communication within the Mistra Environmental Communication Program.
