More about the The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026
Despite their global significance, rangelands are under-recognized and under-valued, and have rarely been featured in international agendas. Urgent action is thus needed to protect rangelands so as for them to continue providing valuable services to humanity and nature. As such, on 22 March 2022, the United Nations General Assembly approved the proposal by the Government of Mongolia and declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and a global coalition of partners, organisations and individuals have formed an international support group to lay the foundation for a successful international year in 2026. By 2026, the IYRP seeks to create greater awareness in all spheres of government, science and society about value of rangelands and pastoralism.
