Join us for a lunch lecture about the mental health of farmers! Senior adviser Peter Lundqvist describes both the protective factors and risk factors that affect the Swedish farmer – and what the government might do to improve their situation.

Please note that this lecture is in Swedish.

Drawing on a national study made on the request of the Swedish Board of Agriculture, Peter Lundqvist explains how the Swedish farmer often suffers from an excessive work load, and also faces challenges related to economy, weather, climate change, laws, regulations and inspections. Crime, loneliness, isolation, a lack of support and other factors sometimes lead to a sense of insecurity.

Farmers use both positive and negative strategies to cope with the they experience. The availability of external support depends on where you live, and many farmers lack trust in actors outside of their family. Peter Lundqvist argues that there is a huge need to support farmers’ mental helath and that there is a lot of good opportunites to do so – as long as the issues are prioritized in society and among politicians.

Peter Lundqvist is a professor in Work Science at the Department of People and Society.

This Worth Knowing lecture is part of SLU:s Rural Week programme.
