Forest regeneration is the process by which a forest area is re-established after that the trees have been harvested. The goal of forest regeneration is to restore the ecological and environmental functions of the forest, as well as to provide economic, social, and cultural ecosystem services to society and the forest owners.
The purpose of the course is to present a comprehensive overview of the complete chain of forest regeneration and to give the students insight into the complexity of regeneration methods in Scandinavia. New findings and insights in seedling types, planting techniques and soil scarification methods will be discussed and evaluated, leading to an understanding of plant ecophysiology and soil and site factors. The course will also provide knowledge in design of regeneration experiments and the techniques in measurements of seedling vitality and growth. The chain of management, from seed to established trees, will also be part of the discussion.
