Fred Stoddard

Frederick Lothrop Stoddard
I am a guest professor in the Department of Crop Production Ecology, hosted by Profs Ingrid Öborn and Göran Bergkvist. My home institution is the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Presentation

My research focuses on grain legumes, particularly faba bean (Vicia faba), in cropping, food and feed systems.

My activities range from genetics and breeding of faba bean, through various agronomic aspects such as stress and disease responses, to environmental impacts and quality for food and feed uses. Legumes, with their capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen instead of needing manure or fertilizer nitrogen, have an important role in adding sustainability to a cropping system while contributing plant protein to the food and feed system.

I held an August T Larsson visiting fellowship at SLU from 2020 to 2023 and I aim to continue visiting and collaborating.

I currently lead a NordForsk-funded project, FabaNova, about improving faba bean for drought response, earliness of maturity, and resistance to chocolate spot disease. The partners are METK in Estonia, SLU Alnarp in Sweden, and NMBU and Nibio in Norway.

I recently coordinated an ERANET project, LegumeGap, about factors contributing to the difference between potential and on-farm yields. The 10 partner institutions included SLU Uppsala.
