A PhD-student with the Toxicological Food Safety research group at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health

Research

I am a PhD-student in Biomedicine, were the overarching goal with my thesis is to contribute with more knowledge on the exposure patterns and health effects of highly fluorinated compounds (PFAS) on Swedish children and adolescents. Such research is beneficial when deriving future health-based guidance values for PFAS exposure from food and drinking water for the European population but also as a tool in the work towards the UN defined global goal on improving water quality. My PhD-studies are funded by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and FORMAS.

Using biomonitoring data from the population-based dietary survey Riksmaten Adolescent 2016-2017 (RMA), I specifically aim to determine the importance of drinking water, as well as other commonly consumed food groups in Sweden, as an exposure source of PFAS using statistical modelling. In the future, I will investigate combination effects, or “cocktail effects”, of PFAS and other persistent organic pollutants on child/adolescent thyroid hormone status using bio-banked blood samples from RMA and the Uppsala-based mother/child cohort Persistent Organic Pollutants in Uppsala Primiparas (POPUP). Both POPUP and RMA are coordinated and administrated by the Swedish Food Agency.
