Linda Marie Hannius
Presentation
My name is Linda Marie Hannius and I work as a doctoral student at the Section of Environment, Care and Herd Health (Department of Animal Environment and Health) at SLU in Uppsala, Ultuna.
My interest in animal welfare started even before I started studying my batchelor at the Ethology and the animal welfare program, but this interest has followed me and developed throughout my studies. During my bachelor thesis, I studied different management methods when herding pigs, which increased my interest in pigs. This led me to write my master's thesis on differences in general behaviors and social interactions of young Yorkshire gilts in different social environments. During and after my master's degree, I worked as a research assistant to broaden my knowledge of research, which I hope will be of great use now.
In my doctoral project, the aim is to investigate differences between breeds indirectly selected for group housed or individually stalled environments as well as effects of different social environments during rearing. The results of the study are expected to be an important contribution to the next essential step in the development of group housed sow systems; using pigs genetically and behaviourally suitable for group housing.
