Maarten Wynants

I am interested in assessing the effects of land use and climatic variability on soil erosion and transport dynamics of sediment and nutrients in catchments. I specialise in the application of multiple environmental diagnostic tools: soil quality, sediment source tracing, radiometric dating, sediment and nutrient flux modelling. The ultimate aim of my work is to contribute to sustainable land management plans safeguarding food security, water quality, livelihoods and biodiversity.

Presentation

12/2021- Current:

PostDoctoral researcher in Water Quality Modelling at the Department of Soil and Environment, SLU.

Research

  • Understanding of the dynamics and pathways of nutrient and sediment transport in catchments.
  • Disentangle the effects of land use and climatic variability as drivers of nutrient and sediment concentrations in streams.
  • Evaluate methods and pinpoint areas for mitagative actions to improve water quality.
  • Model nutrient and sediment transport under future climate and land use scenarios, with emphasis on extreme events.

Environmental analysis

  • Sediment and nutrient flux modelling
  • Land cover reconstruction
  • Sediment source tracing (geochemical and biochemical)
  • Sediment dating and sedimentation reconstruction (Fallout radionuclides)
  • Water- and soil quality
