Matthew Hiron

I am originally from the UK but have been living in Sweden for many years. After graduating with a MSc degree in biology from Umeå University, I worked for a County Administration Board’s conservation department in western Sweden. My work included field surveys of threatened species and habitats (e.g. in Natura 2000 areas) as well as studies of historical changes of semi-natural grassland. In 2013 I completed my PhD at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala. The focus of my PhD research was the relationships between field- and landscape-scale agricultural land use patterns and farmland birds in Sweden. After my PhD, I was involved in projects that aimed to quantify the effects of biofuel harvest (forestry residues such as tree stumps and slash) on dead-wood dependent beetles, and also completed post-doc positions at Newcastle University, UK (together with Professor Mark Whittingham) and SLU, Uppsala. I am currently working with national and regional environmental monitoring projects focused on farmland habitats (småbiotoper) and grasslands in Sweden. For the past few years I have been working on projects looking att virtual fencing applications for flexible grazing systems and conservation management in heterogenous semi-natural grasslands.

Can soundscape recordings be used to efficiently monitor wildlife and measure habitat quality?
Can ecosystem service arguments be used for the effective motivation of biodiversity conservation? Is this line of argument a help or a hinder?
No one can deny that ecosystem services are important, but with many political platforms now relying on ecosystem services to drive through conservation policy we ecologists need to help provide quantitative evaluation of Biodiversity - Ecosystem Service (BES) relationships. I am attempting to quantify a range of ways we humans might put values on species (using farmland birds as a focus group). Once species have been scored to reflect intrinsic, aesthetic and utilitarian values I will investigate how species and communities contribute to multiple values. For example: are species of special conservation interest also highly valued for other uses? Are there trade-offs and synergies spatially in how species assemblages provide different functions, values and services? Do we find the most multi-functional species communities in certain landscapes?
