I am a Ph.D. student working on host-parasite interactions with the European Honeybee, and its ectoparasite, the Varroa mite. We are in a unique position to have access to a special population of honeybees on Gotland, Sweden, that have managed to survive with mite infestation with little to no interference. We are using this population to try and identify pheromones that perhaps help them in surviving without treatment, that most other honeybees worldwide require.
Background
I am originally from the United States, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Zoology at Humboldt State University in Northern California. My bachelor's project looked at the Purple Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus), and its aggregation behavior under stressful conditions. I earned my master's degree from Uppsala University in Ecology & Conservation. My master's thesis looked at the moore frog (Rana arvalis) and how a subset of the species has adapted to living in acidic pond water.
