Odd Höglund
Presentation
Professor of small animal surgery.
Previous position: senior lecturer in translational veterinary medicine, with special responsibility for extension.
Background: I am a veterinarian, PhD (Clinical Science, Surgery) and associate professor (“Docent”) in Veterinary Science with focus on small animal surgery.
I enable and develop extension; my research and my teaching are closely linked to clinical work.
In my work I perform research in surgery and I teach surgery to veterinary students.
My research is focused on development, tests and evaluation of innovative surgical techniques that aim to enable a quicker, easier and safer surgery with reduced risk of complications and shortened time for recovery.
Other research areas are surgical stress and biomarkers for diagnosis of disease and follow-up of surgical treatment.
Associate professor of surgery since December 2016 (i.e. "Docent") Veterinary Science with focus on Small Animal Surgery.
Fellow of the Academy of Translational Medicine Professionals (FAcadTM) since 2018-10-01.
Senior lecturer in translational veterinary medicine since 2020-03-01.
Appointed Distinguished University Teacher at SLU 2022.
Appointed full professor small animal surgery September 2024.
Teaching
My teaching is mainly soft tissue surgery and endoscopic / minimally invasive techniques in companion animals. The clinical teaching of veterinary students comprises theoretical lectures and practical training in the clinical setting of the University animal hospital. Additionally, I supervise students for their degree projects / students degree thesis in topics that relate to surgery and surgical implants.
Research
My research is focused on development, tests and evaluation of surgical implants that aim to enable a quicker, easier and safer surgery with reduced risk of complications and shortened time for recovery. From a material perspective, I mainly work with resorbable polymers and ceramic materials together with researchers at Uppsala University and KTH, Stockholm. Initially, a lot of the manufacturing development work of the first implant was done together with the medical device industry of Uppsala, and later on in the US and Ireland. I am involved in Uppsala's Competence Centre for Additive Manufacturing for the Life Sciences (3D printing).
A translational research project, SLU - UU, surgery and material sciences: evaluation of new biomaterials for spinal fusion. In collaboration with professor Franck Forterre.
Validation of VR simulator for laparoscopic canine ovariectomy, in collaboration with company Surgical Science.
Another research area is surgical stress. Objective methods are needed for evaluation of surgical techniques. All surgery triggers a stress response, which can be measured and used for comparisons. The physiological reactions and biomarkers of stress can be used for evaluation of both surgical techniques and anaesthetic protocols.
Cooperation
New knowledge and results of research should come into use, also outside academia. Collaboration and commercialisation are important at SLU. Through university spin-out companies, I aim to make innovative techniques available to others, protect IP rights and commercialise the innovative surgical implants that were developed and tested in our research (www.cavix.com, www.LigaTie.com).
I’ve collaborated mainly with medical device industry in both Uppsala, Ireland and the USA. I’ve completed education and training at our Business Incubator, Uppsala Innovation Centre.
Development of VR simulators for laparoscopic canine ovariectomy, in collaboration with company Surgical Science.
Background
I obtained my degree in veterinary medicine, SLU, Uppsala, 1995. I spent over a decade in private practice, almost exclusively companion animals, in both Sweden and England. I did my postgraduate studies 2007-2012, and defended my PhD in surgery, Faculty of veterinary medicine, SLU, in 2012.
Link to thesis: Half of the thesis concerned development of a self-locking resorbable implant, with the aim to enable quicker, easier and safer surgical ligations. The other half of the thesis was related to measurements of surgical stress for evaluation and comparisons of different surgical techniques.
Supervision
Post-doc
Michael Palmer. Biomaterials researcher, funded via a U-Share grant.
