William Newson

I work with plant proteins for both food and industrial uses, for example as biodegradable plastics. My interests include protein extraction and purification from a variety of sources, mainly underutilized agricultural products like oilseed meal which remains after oil extraction and green leaves that are normally plowed into the field after harvest.

Presentation

I have always been interested in the behaviour of materials, from why egg whites foam to how plastis and ceramics break  or high tempearure superalloys survive in jet engines. This interest coupled with a desire to address environmental aspects of current non-degradable plasics has led me to work with plant protiens as a renewable and biodegradable alternative to current plastics. This interest in protiens has led to investigations of new sources for food protiens, addressing food security, climate change and the ongoing shift from animal protien to plant protien for human consumption.

Research

Plant Protein Factory - Pilot scale extraction of proteins and other plant compunds from green leaves in cooperation with 14 industrial partners.

BioBIGG - a multinational Interreg SBR funded project focussed on improved utilization of bio-based resources in the South Baltic region.
