Every year, ca 1.7 million farmed young salmon and sea trout (smolt) are released into Swedish rivers, smolts that are naturally "genetically labelled" already at birth. By doing DNA analyses of the breeding fish, you can follow the journey of the offspring out into the sea and back to the home river. Now researchers at the Swedish University of Agriculture want to build up genetic pedigrees for salmon and trout that can improve breeding, but also increase knowledge about salmon and sea trout - both the farmed and the wild.
