Water sampling during the winter season is important for environmental monitoring of lakes and streams. However, it can be difficult to reach the sampling locations when the ice prevents the use of a boat, and at the same time is too weak to walk on.
Since last winter, field staff at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment use a hydrocopter for sampling of completely or partly ice-covered lakes. A hydrocopter is a flat-bottomed boat that is powered by a large air propeller and can travel over water, ice, snow and land.
Below the picture are four videos showing the hydrocopter in use. You need to accept cookies to see the videos. Otherwise you can find them at the YouTube channel of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment.
