The very first meeting of SLU’s internal global network took place on 21 March. More than 80 persons took part in Uppsala, Umeå, Skara and Alnarp. People also joined via Skype, even all the way from Benin in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Sara Gräslund (Head of SLU Global) presented the aim and format for the network and Ylva Hillbur (Pro Vice-Chancellor for International relations) talked about SLU’s work for global development.
A Global mingle tour under different topics, gave the participants a chance to meet and make new contacts. Many interesting discussions could be heard in the venues both in Uppsala and Alnarp, and in the video conference where participants from Umeå, Skara and on Skype attended.
- It is important to increase the contact with other researchers at SLU, both in order to help each other with practical matters but also to write joint applications and organize larger collaborations. I hope that SLU’s global network will make it easier to know who is working where and with what, says one of the participants after the meeting.
Dan Wilhelmsson from the Swedish Research Council (VR) presented this year’s Development Research calls. One new example is the possibility to apply for an International postdoc grant, which can give 1 050 000 SEK per year during 1,5-3 years for work with relevance to low income countries, to someone who completed their PhD during the last two years.
Next network meeting
The next meeting of SLU’s global network is on 14 May 2019 at 9:00. Preliminary, the focus will be on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a presentation about Sweden’s work with SDGs from Mia Crawford at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
About the network
The network is open for all staff and PhD students at SLU who are involved or interested in collaboration with low-income countries. The aim is to increase the contact between colleagues and to promote internal collaboration and multidisciplinarity. The network started during spring 2019 and is coordinated by SLU Global.
In addition, PhD students who are involved in projects in low-income countries have a specific sub-network. Hence PhD students are welcome to join both network.
