Policy for SLU’s global contribution to Agenda 2030

Published: 19 August 2019

SLU’s Vice-Chancellor decided in 2019 on a policy for SLU’s contribution to the global implementation of Agenda 2030. The policy specifies that SLU aims to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 in our work for global development, and identifies six prioritized areas for this work.

SLU contributes to Agenda 2030 by developing knowledge and capacity for sustainable management and use of natural resources. Since many decades, the university has extensive development research and collaborations that contribute to sustainable development also internationally. In June 2019, the Vice-Chancellor decided on a new policy for SLU's contribution to global implementation of Agenda 2030.

Through the new policy, SLU focuses its global contribution to Agenda 2030 on six areas that reflect the university’s mission and strengths. Each area is linked to several of the SDGs and targets. The prioritised areas are: climate change, food security, a circular and biobased economy, biodiversity and ecosystems, global health, and urban sustainability.

Background

In 2015, the United Nations member states committed to Agenda 2030 with its 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to tackle the global challenges and transform our world. The Agenda is universal and indivisible, and eradicating poverty and leaving no one behind are at its core. It is closely connected to several international agreements including the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

SLU, with its mission to develop knowledge and capacity for sustainable management and use of the biological natural resources through research, education and environmental monitoring, has an important role to play in the global implementation of Agenda 2030. SLU’s international engagement spans more than half a century and is aligned with Sweden’s Policy for Global Development.
