Focus on livestock production - Care for a sustainable world!

In order to further promote research on animal health and welfare, and improve the overall quality of animal-based food, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, and the Department of Molecular Sciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences organized an online conference.

On January 17-18 2023, the conference Animal Science: “Sustainable Livestock Production and Animal Welfare” was held. The conference was hosted by the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Department of Molecular Sciences) and supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The sponsor of the conference was Swedish Institute (Svenska Institutet, project number 01877/2021).

The conference attracted leading scientists in the areas of livestock protection and animal welfare from different countries, including but not limited to Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Poland, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. We discussed all aspect of livestock production and animal welfare, ranging from legislations and attitudes toward animal welfare to the safety and quality of animal-based products. We also discussed how Russian aggression against Ukraine affected the livestock chain. 

“I thank the organizing committee for giving such a platform to all of us to raise the issues and go through the solutions of such an important issue as animal welfare”, - said Associate Professor Sergii Gryshchenko from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.

“Meat and livestock also contribute to human health and well-being, and during the conference, we had an opportunity to discuss this contribution with our colleagues from different countries. It was especially interesting to learn about huge differences in the recommended meat consumption between Sweden and Ukraine”, explained Sabine Sampels, SLU.

“It was a privilege for the organizing committee to work on the conference. Particularly,  I want to thank Natalia Hrishchenko from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine for her fantastic work with the organization and delivering the best results no matter the circumstances. I sincerely hope you all enjoyed these two days”, added Galia Zamaratskaia, SLU.
