Dr Judith Irene Nagasha, project leader in the AgriFoSe2030 project "Gender and livestock value chains in Western Uganda" won the Social Entrepreneurship Challenge organised by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel Chair of Social Entrepreneurship. The challenge seeks to recognise the most innovative and inspiring ideas that have long lasting positive impacts on society.
Judith’s project aims to empower women to produce and market safe milk products, add value and be able to access lucrative markets to increase household incomes and improve food security. The project aligns with SDG’s 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality)
The project has trained several women in Uganda’s Kiruhura district to process milk into higher value products including yoghurt, butter, ghee and cheese. The project also used participatory and gender transformative approaches to encourage male community members to see the value in women’s contributions to the milk value chain. With the consent of male livestock farmers who dominate the milk value chain, many women are now able to sustainably source milk products, refine them into marketable goods with longer shelf life and are on track to create sustainable and competitive businesses.
AgriFoSe2030 congratulates Dr Judith Irene Nagasha for winning the challenge and we are grateful to the VUB Chair’s initiative for creating a better world through social entrepreneurship.
