Bit or no bit - what does the horse prefer?

How are horses affected when ridden with or without a bit? This is the question Elke Hartmann, Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, and her research team aim to answer in a new study conducted at six Swedish riding schools.

The research aims to improve horse welfare by gaining a better understanding of both the horse’s and rider’s experiences with traditional bits and bitless alternatives.

The project is part of an international research collaboration and is expected to provide new insights into how equine equipment can evolve to align with horse welfare principles.
