Artwork in forest

May 19, Bildmuseet in collaboration with Future Forests organized an excursion to the forest in Vännforsbäck. The aim was to inaugurate a new, wood-based artwork.

“Waste waste waste (Spill spill spill)” is the title of a new forest artwork created by Malin Arnell and Åsa Elzén. The artwork was inaugurated during an excursion and began with each participant bringing a piece of scrap lumber, retrieved from a local sawmill, on a ceremonial walk into the forest.

Upon arrival, guests were met with a large pile of scrap lumber under a towering pine stand. This scrap lumber had been returned to the forest as deadwood, where in time it will decompose and become home to flora and fauna. Thereby it will support the ecosystem in a meaningful way.

The artists described their motivation and intentions. Then followed a discussion about the importance of deadwood by SLU lecturer Jörgen Sjögren, who is the coordinator for the competence area Restoration Ecology. Participants then placed their own piece of scrap lumber onto the large pile, therefore becoming part of the artwork and its journey.

The event was organized together with the owners of the forest and the summer café Kullar och Klang. The artwork is part of the exhibit titled Eight degrees / Contemporary art about the forest at Bildmuseet, on display until January 2025.
