During the IUFRO World conference, SLU launched an abbreviated English version of the book about Swedish forests over the last century.

The book describes the history of the Swedish National Forest Inventory since 1923, why it started and it´s development up until today. Facts on forest areas, growing stock, growth, and harvesting are shared as well as examples of the use of collected data, and a glimpse of future development.

Göran Ericsson, Dean of the Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU, ensured the translation and print of the English version of the book, and also saw to that it was distributed to all speakers at the IUFRO World conference.

"It’s about sharing our cultural history and the foundation of today’s knowledge on the Swedish forests. To me it is important to show how field inventories is a necessary basis in order to be able to incorporate new and smart methods to support future sustainable use of forest and forest resources", says Göran Ericsson.

At SLU’s booth in the IUFRO exhibition area, the book was a popular item. Almost every copy of the book in the booth was brought home by a new owner.

Facts:

Title: Sweden’s forests over the last 100 years. The Swedish National Forest Inventory 1923–2023.

Editors: Jonas Fridman & Kjell Danell. Layout: Lars Paulsrud. Published by Gidlunds förlag.

The book is an abbreviated English version of the book ”Sveriges skogar under 100 år” published in Swedish , to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) in 2023.

"The book describes how the forest resource, so crucial for the development of Swedish prosperity, has been surveyed and described by the Swedish NFI over 100 years. The collected data has also proven to be valuable in several forest-related research fields as well as for social and economic development. The content of the book provides a clear picture of why the forest, as a resource for industry, biodiversity, and climate, has created such a polarized discussion on how we should manage it in the best way". Jonas Fridman, SLU and one of editors of the book.

The book can be ordered from for example Bokus.com, Adlibris.com or Akademibokhandeln.se.
