Mineral deficiency in pigs from Laos

In Laos more than 60% of the families raise a few sows for food purpose. The pigs are often held on a free-range basis and are destined to find most of their food on their own, but they are also fed by-products from crop production. The piglet mortality is very high. Many factors can contribute to this mortality but one of the hypotheses is that the pigs can suffer from calcium and sodium deficiency. This will be examined in a PhD project that will last from 2008 to 2012.
