Digital image transfer at veterinary inspection in connection with slaughter

The project aimed to make the official control at slaughter of domestic livestock and game handling more efficient. The aim was to:

  • Define the practical and technical needs with regard to image transfer for veterinary inspection at slaughter.
  • Inventory technical solutions on the Swedish market.
  • Assess the reliability if inspections with such solutions.
  • Assess the technical functionality of such solutions and the general consequences for food safety, biosecurity and animal welfare.

The project was a scientific collaboration with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and the Swedish National Food Agency. Collaboration also took place with slaughter companies. The project was conducted on commission from the National Food Agency (Moderniserad köttbesiktning vid slakt och vilthantering).

Participants at the department werer doctoral student Viktor Almqvist, associate professor Jan Hultgren and professor Lotta Berg.

The project started in August 2018 and finished in December 2020. Publication continues in 2021. In November 2021, Viktor Almqvist defends his doctoral dissertation "Who you gonna call? Examining the possibilities of remote veterinary meat inspection.
