BECFOR - Forest Management

Last changed: 14 May 2021
Managed forest landscape in Jämtland, Sweden

The forest management topic within BECFOR has a focus on the hemiboreal and boreal forest, especially in Fennoscandia. We are aiming for a diversity of courses and activities within the full range of applied forestry, ecological aspects of silviculture and ecophysiological concepts and modelling of growth and yield.

Focal study areas include impacts of silvicultural systems and methods, including set-aside forest land, on major sustainability issues such as long-term feedstock supply, economy, water quality, carbon balance, biodiversity etc. The research is primarily based on analyses of empirical data from short- and long-term field experiments, national forest inventory data and survey data, but also includes modelling approaches. The overarching goal is to provide useful input into an adaptive forest management framework in a future with expected increased demand for forest biomass as the bio-economy develops. The challenge is to develop silvicultural systems and methods that balance sustainability goals set at the landscape level.
