The European Nitrates Directive obliges Member States to establish national action plans to reduce nutrient emissions and deliver ‘good water quality for all purposes’. The Dutch national action plan is based on soil type and crop specific N standards (fixed N application rates per crop). I will give an overview of the nutrient management regulations, and discuss relationships between fertilization and nitrate concentration in groundwater.
