PhD student Annie Hägglund

Annie studies the relationship between behaviour, health and welfare of farm animals, as well as how these are affected in different production systems.
What background do you have?
I did my honours bachelor degree in Animal behavior in Scotland, at the University of Aberdeen and my master of science at SLU in Animal Science, where I focused on animal welfare and anthrozoology in my exjob about Farmer’s attitudes towards dairy cow cleanliness.
What previous experience do you have?
Between my master of science and this PhD I worked at the county government. Both with farmland, animal registry and animal welfare inspections. I’ve grown up in the countryside however, and my father had both dairy cows and slaughter pigs on his farm in Bröttjestad.
Why have you applied for this position?
First of all, because I love science and I want to learn how to become a researcher. I also want to study something I’m passionate about, and my project combines many of my interests, such as sustainability, health, animal welfare and so on.
What are your hopes and expectations for your work in SustAinimal?
I hope to become wiser by getting to work with people within in many different areas of expertise and to share knowledge between us, as well as between the different collaborations SustAinimal have.
Why do you think this is important?
I believe it’s important to share knowledge about the role of food-producing animals and together work towards a more sustainable food system in Sweden, both for the animals and for the farmers.
Why do you want to do this work?
If we want to work towards a more sustainable future for farm animals and food production, I believe that initiatives like SustAinimal is necessary and something I’m happy to be a part of.
