Animal Genetics - health, behaviour and welfare
In this course you will learn about disease genetics, genetics of animal behaviour and breeding for improved animal welfare. Three parallel parts run along the whole course: lectures, case studies and own project work. Computer exercises are also included.
Prior knowledge required:
180 credits at first cycle level, of which
- 60 credits biology, animal science, equine science, veterinary nursing or veterinary medicine (of which 5 credits genetics)
- or 60 credits agricultural sciences (of which at least 30 credits animal and dairy science/zoology and 5 credits genetics)
and
- English 6
Basic Animal Breeding and Genetics
This distance course gives an introduction to genetics of domestic animals, for example dogs, horses, sheep, cows. All aspects from the DNA of a single individual to the variation and changes in a group of animals are covered in the course. Lectures gives examples on how different traits are inherited and how breeding can be planned for different species. Exercises give the students knowledge about how the traits in the offspring can be predicted from the traits of the parents.
Prior knowledge required:
- 30 ECTS in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary medicine or Animal nursing.
- English 6
Bioinformatics
This course at master level gives an introduction to bioinformatics with many hands on computer exercises. The course is 15 ECTS and is given on campus Ultuna the second half of the autumn semester.
Prior knowledge required:
- 180 credits at first cycle level, of which
- 60 hp credits biology, animal science, equine science, veterinary nursing or veterinary medicine or of which 15 credits cell biology or molecular genetics or genetics/breeding.
or
- 60 credits computer science and 7,5 credits cell biology or molecular genetics or genetics/breeding.
and
- English 6
Designing breeding programs
The course gives the student advanced knowledge in practical animal breeding. The course is given during the first part of the spring semester.
Prior knowledge required:
180 credits at first cycle level, of which
- 7 credits genetics/animal breeding
- 7,5 credits statistics-mathematics
Genome analysis
The course at master level gives in-depth knowledge on methods for studying DNA and structure and evolution of genomes. The course is 15 ECTS and is given on campus Ultuna the first half of the autumn semester.
Prior knowledge required:
180 credits at first cycle level, of which
- 60 credits biology, animal science, equine science, veterinary nursing or veterinary medicine or
- 60 credits agricultural sciences (of which at least 30 credits animal and dairy science/zoology)
and
- English 6
Sustainable aquaculture
The course gives basic knowledge about aquaculture. The student will learn both about the most common farmed fish species and about production systems. Most of the teaching is online, but there are a few compulsory meetings for practical laboratory exercises and study visits.
Prior knowledge required:
- Chemistry 2
- Biology 2
- Mathematics 3b or 3c
The biology of the horse
The course gives the student basic knowledge about the biology, ethology, feeding, breeding and management of the healthy horse. The course is 7,5 ECTS and is given on campus Ultuna in September.
Prior knowledge required:
- 80 hp Animal Science or 80 hp Biology, of which at least 7,5 hp animal physiology, 5 hp breeding, and 7,5 hp nutrition
