Förvaltning av Biologiska Resurser

What policy should we use to achieve a certain environmental quality at the lowest cost? How shall the combination of costly actions in different countries be in order to achieve an international cooperation? How much fish can be taken without running the risk of extinguishing it in the long run? What is the value of a cleaner Baltic Sea? What are the relationships between population, economic growth and environment? To what extent can the government or any other federal authority change property rights in order to improve the environmental quality? Advanced economic theory and methods are analysed and applied during the class to answer these questions.

Canvas
For the first time ever I'm using Canvas as the main platform for information about the course. The page has just gone live, I hope it all works... I think I have to organize for you (students) to be invited. I'll check that out.

First class, on Tuesday
Hej! I've been looking forward to meeting you all on Tuesday, but under the current circumstances (covid recommendations) I can't justify holding a class IRL. Therefore the class will be shifted to zoom. I will put out a link on Monday. Sorry if this is a disappointment for some of you. On Tuesday we will discuss (among how things) how best to proceed with the teaching. /Rob

Welcome to the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Here you find important information that will be useful before arriving to Sweden and while you are a student. https://student.slu.se/en/studies/new-student/check-list/ • You need to have a student account in order to access Ladok Student at SLU and to sign up for exams. • You must be admitted and registered to attend the course. Unregistered students may NOT stay on the premises, for reasons of insurance. • You have to register yourself via Ladok Student. The self-registration is open 5 workdays before the start of the course and 3 days after. Welcome to the course!
The course will be organized around a large number of short (15 to 30 minute) videos which Rob will record during October and November. We will have a small number of meetings (see schedule) which will be student-driven: comments, questions, and discussions. We will talk through this at the first meeting on 2 November. You should keep the meeting times free in your diaries, but note that we may not use all of the times. Note also that the meetings may have to shift to zoom in case the covid situation changes.

Kursplan och övrig information

Betygskriterier

Assessment will consist of (1) the examination; and (2) a short essay and seminar presentation on a recent paper. In the latter we will go beyond the textbooks and cover some material based on recent research.

The exam will test the student's ability to understand and work with (including solving) basic economic models related to dynamic management of biological resources and climate change, and to discuss the results of such models in relation to policy dilemmas. It accounts for 67 percent of the marks.

The essay will cover a research paper (essay) relevant to the topics we have discussed. The paper should contain an original research contribution. The focus is on how the theory we have learnt during lectures and exercises shapes up when it is faced by reality. Papers chosen must relate theoretical results to empirical data. The paper and presentation together account for 33 percent of the marks.

More details, including exact grade boundaries, will be announced shortly. Note however that to pass the course, all elements (exam, paper, presentation) must achieve at least a pass grade.
